SSK 2.0
Social Service Knitting
Not a retreat, but just like one because when we serve others, we take care of ourselves.
Join us for scheduled weekly "mini retreats" with old and new friends to knit for the following three organizations from Mid - December and culminating at Knitting in the Heartland in April.
Sunflower House: They work with victims of abuse ranging from ages 3 - 17 in Wyandotte and Johnson County. We will be making hats, scarves, and blankets for individuals they serve. Greatest need is for teenage sizes. For more information about this organization, visit their website at https://sunflowerhouse.org/.
Knitted Knockers: Many of us know someone who has had breast cancer and has had a mastectomy or lumpectomy. We will be making breast prosthetics to be donated to local hospitals for distribution to women in our area or beyond if needed. Greatest need for our area is A and B cup sizes. Please note only specific yarns can be used to make the prosthetics and we have a number of skeins available which were graciously donated to our organization. For more information, visit their website at https://www.knittedknockers.org/.
Mother Bear Project: Unconditional love is one of the best gifts a person can bestow onto someone else. For children in emerging countries who have lost their only caregiver to AIDS / HIV, a hand knit bear is just the gift they need. This is a great project to let your creative juices flow and is a great destaching project. We have purchased a few patterns so please see a subcommittee member if you would like to knit or crochet a bear. For more information, visit their website at http://motherbearproject.org/about.html.
