Charity Projects

Our members have a strong commitment to the Kansas City community and beyond. Below are the on-going projects we contribute to in order to support individuals and families in need, as well as other non-profit organizations. See the sub-page for SSK 2.0 information for our social service knitting projects.

  • University Health, Behavioral Health Group Home-Knitting and Fiber Arts Group
Two group homes in Northeast Kansas City, MO are supporting adults who have a mental health and/or substance abuse diagnosis who have recently been houseless. These two group homes support participants in finding creative ways to manage stress and build success/esteem through fiber arts. Bilateral brain activity helps reset reactivity toward a place of calm. Sunflower Knitters has donated supplies of yarn, project bags, and notions to support this group and their success.

  • Newborns in Need
Their focus is to help the most vulnerable babies in need of essentials. Volunteers prepare Immediate "Need Kits" for preemies, newborns, and toddlers through 2T. To meet their goals, they depend on our community members and volunteers to source items to meet the needs of these babies. During their October Baby Shower in Leavenworth, Kansas, Sunflower Knitters donated 4 baby blankets and 12 hats to their October Baby Shower for new moms on the Army Post at Fort Leavenworth.

  •  Don Bosco Center
Sunflower Knitters has donated over 60 Skeins of yarn for their charity knitting group so far in 2023.

  • The Studio Charity Knitting Group

Their mission is to provide resources, education, and an environment for creative upcycling that encourages change in a more responsible community. Sunflower Knitters has donated 4 bins of yarn in 2023. with more planned to be donated in 2024.
